As I was nearing the end of my second year studying psychology at Cambridge University, I decided I wanted to gain some professional experience in marketing and PR. I was keen to combine my interest in science with the variety, creativity and people skills of marketing. During my research, I came across the field of science communications which sounded like a perfect fit. When investigating this field, I discovered Sciad, a full-service brand, digital and PR agency that works with health, science and tech companies. I reached out to Sciad, asking about the possibility of work experience and sent them my CV. Following a one-on-one Zoom interview, Sciad gave me the opportunity to gain an insight into the field of marketing and PR through three weeks of work experience.

During my three weeks with the Sciad team at their Covent Garden office I gained a range of experiences across PR, communications and digital marketing. From my first morning I was able to get involved with different projects across the office. A key part of my role involved social media management as I conducted social media monitoring, created content and scheduled social media posts. I developed new skills in social media writing, learning how to translate the complex messages of innovative science companies into short, engaging social media posts. I also had the opportunity to research and write blog posts and website content for a varied list of clients. I was always learning about something new, for example, for a biotech client I researched dry eye disease and severe corneal damage, whilst for an executive search company I researched the talent shortage within life sciences.

I really enjoyed my time at Sciad with each day bringing something new. Thank you to every member of the team for being welcoming and friendly, answering any questions and helping me out whenever I needed it. I highly recommend reaching out to Sciad if you’re interested in learning more about science communications.
