We all know those post-Christmas weeks can get you down – the nights are long, the weather miserable (mostly) and we all need something to motivate us. Why not dedicate a bit of time this January to improving your communications and networking skills? Register for a conference or event to learn something new or make that crucial contact that could help lead your company to success in the coming year.

Consider attending the Public Communication of Science and Technology (PCST) Conference (4–6 April 2018, Dunedin, New Zealand), which focuses on the power of stories for communicating science with a variety of different audiences. As Brian Trench, President of the PCST Network, explains, “Facts need to be selected, dressed and put into order for them to be communicated; they need, in other words, to be arranged into stories.”

Closer to home, the Natural History Museum of Geneva will be hosting the largest gathering of science communicators in Europe next June at the Ecsite Annual Conference 2018.  The conference promises the opportunity to “sharpen your critical mind, recharge your creative batteries, harvest contacts and tools, make business and let off steam on the dance floor….”.

To meet new people in the industry, to help you achieve your goals, why not join a life sciences networking group such as One Nucleus in Cambridge, or OBN in Oxfordshire, UK?  Both organisations seek to maximise the global growth and competitiveness of their members through a series of seminars and networking events held throughout the year, taking place in London and around the UK.

Alternatively, you might like to connect with the BioIndustry Association (BIA), which promotes the start-up and sustainable growth of innovative life science companies. The BIA represents the interests of its members to a broad section of stakeholders, provides a variety of networking opportunities, and offers a Business Solutions Scheme to help emerging members grow more cost-effectively. There are also a vast array of 2018 conferences listed on BioPartner’s website for you to choose from throughout the year.

Wherever you choose to raise your profile in 2018 – believe in your innovation, develop your story-telling skills, and don’t be afraid to be creative.

We wish you a successful and prosperous New Year and look forward to seeing you at an event soon!
